The NCP Saturday Showcase is a feature story that recognizes students, staff and alumni for their exceptional achievements and contributions to the school community. This week, we have the pleasure of recognizing PHMS language arts teacher Amanda Games and her son, Oliver, a third grade student at Turkey Run Elementary.

When Oliver encountered a spider during his outdoor explorations, he decided to create a paper version, which then accompanied him on various adventures throughout the day. These experiences sparked the creativity of Oliver and his mom, Amanda, leading them to write the children's book, “Ollie and the Spider.”

Using the jumping spider as the central character, Oliver and Amanda took inspiration from real-life adventures to write and illustrate their book. Within a few days, the mother and son team finished the book.  Their shared love for learning, the outdoors, and biology are incorporated into the book making it a fun read for young audiences.

"Oliver and I love to learn, explore the outdoors, and delve into biology. Writing this book was a perfect way to share these interests,"said Amanda.

With “Ollie and the Spider” now available for purchase on Amazon, Amanda and Oliver plan to continue this creative journey by crafting more stories.

"The story is so special to us because it was a wonderful way for us to share our love of learning and creativity," stated Amanda.

"Ollie and the Spider" encourages readers to find joy in the simple wonders of life and the power of imagination. Through their book that blends science, imagination and friendship, Amanda and Oliver hope to inspire others to explore tiny worlds, share big ideas and learn about making mistakes.

The Saturday Showcase provides a platform for students, staff and alumni to be acknowledged for their accomplishments and serves as inspiration for others to strive for excellence. If you would like to submit a nomination, please complete this form.
